Before measuring: hold-point card

Short review for dimensional measurement of mold components

Mold, machining, quality and metrology technicians. ยท Detect missing information, mismatches or unresolved conditions before dimensional measurement begins.

Mark each point as Documented, Pending or Not applicable with a reason. Record the reference and evidence. Only the designated technical authority decides whether the job may proceed.

Identification

Hold points

1. Job defined

Correct drawing and revision; feature, units, requirement and decision authority identified.

2. Instrument identified

ID and model match the applicable record; status and restrictions are available.

3. Method justified

Range, resolution, method and applicable criterion are documented rather than inferred from display digits.

4. Preparation and check

Visible condition, preparation and authorized checks are recorded according to the manual and procedure.

5. Close before measuring

Questions, restrictions and open items have an owner; the decision and link to the dimensional record are documented.

Signals to stop and clarify

Fictional example

FICTIONAL: DEMO-INSERT-A requires an outside measurement. DEMO-MIC-01 has a legible label, but the available record belongs to DEMO-MIC-02. Status: PENDING. Record the mismatch and request the correct record; do not conclude that the instrument measures incorrectly.

Sources

[S1] NIST - Metrological Traceability: Frequently Asked Questions and NIST Policy - 3.2(5), 5.1.1, 5.1.4, 5.1.7
Traceability applies to a measurement result, does not automatically establish fitness for purpose, and requires documentation of the measurement system and calibration chain. Does not prescribe the instrument, uncertainty limit or decision rule for a mold component.

[S2] Mitutoyo - Quick Guide to Precision Measuring Instruments - PG11 / General notes on using the micrometer
Manufacturer guidance identifies instrument selection, thermal preparation and measuring-face care as relevant micrometer-use considerations. This general guide does not replace the manual for the model in use and is not generalized to every instrument.

[S3] JCGM - VIM3: calibration - 2.39
Calibration establishes a relation involving reference values, indications and associated uncertainties. Definition only; not a calibration procedure.

[S4] JCGM - VIM3: verification - 2.44
Verification provides objective evidence that specified requirements have been fulfilled. Supplies no acceptance requirement for a particular instrument or component.

[S5] JCGM - VIM3: adjustment - 3.11
Adjustment is a set of operations performed so a measuring system provides prescribed indications. Does not authorize the user to adjust an instrument or replace calibration.
